This is a beautiful strand of extra large Mali African Amber beads. This strand is really quite amazing -- the beads are each the size of a half dollar in diameter. All of the beads are a rich butter scotch in color. Of course, these types of "African Amber" aren't really amber -- instead they are an early phenolic plastic that was traded to Africa early in the 20th century. But one of the things that makes these beads so beautiful is that they "age" very much like an organic material. These beads have a particularly lovely patina. Strand measures 28 inches long. The center bead measures 31 mm in diameter.
