As a sex writer, Jesse Bering is fearless--and peerless. --Dan Savage

You are a sexual deviant. A pervert, through and through. We may not want to admit it, but as the award-winning columnist and psychologist Jesse Bering reveals in Perv, there is a spectrum of perversion along which we all sit. Whether it's voyeurism, exhibitionism, or your run-of-the-mill foot fetish, we all possess a suite of sexual tastes as unique as our fingerprints--and as secret as the rest of the skeletons we've hidden in our closets.

Combining cutting-edge studies and critiques of landmark research and conclusions drawn by Sigmund Freud, Alfred Kinsey, and the DSM-5, Bering pulls the curtain back on paraphilias, arguing that sexual deviance is commonplace. He explores the countless fetishists of the world, including people who wear a respectable suit during the day and handcuff a willing sexual partner at night. But he also takes us into the lives of erotic outliers, such as a woman who falls madly in love with the Eiffel Tower; a pair of deeply affectionate identical twins; those with a particular penchant for statues; and others who are enamored of crevices not found on the human body.

Moving from science to politics, psychology, history, and his own reflections on growing up gay in America, Bering confronts hypocrisy, prejudice, and harm as they relate to sexuality on a global scale. Humanizing so-called deviants while at the same time asking serious questions about the differences between thought and action, he presents us with a challenge: to understand that our best hope of solving some of the most troubling problems of our age hinges entirely on the amoral study of sex.

As kinky as it is compassionate, illuminating, and engrossing, Perv is an irresistible and deeply personal book. I can't promise you an orgasm at the end of our adventure, Bering writes, but I can promise you a better understanding of why you get the ones you do.

Drama Free For Sure!
Format: Kindle
Nedra Glover Tawwab is a New York Times bestselling author, a licensed therapist, and a sought-after relationship expert. This book is a therapeutic and educational tool that addresses how to consciously change behaviors you’d rather not have in relationships, specifically, around your family. For those of us who have delved into the self-help book world, this is an in-depth, thorough refresher, focusing on family dynamics. Nedra’s core belief is that relationships contribute to mental health. They can cause you pain or they heal you. She focuses on taking your relationships seriously and teaches the art of having tough but intentional conversations to create positive change. OR you’ll learn how to sever ties when the relationship is unmanageable. None is more influential than the formative years we’ve had with our family of origin. A lot of people lament that not everything is about the family, but yup, so often it’s true. In childhood, most likely we weren’t allowed to be ourselves, so our true selves started to develop when becoming an adult. Like a butterfly using its colossal strength to break out of its chrysalis, we too must use our emotional colossal strength to break out of our childhood mold in order to fly. We are able to have relationships with family on our terms.

Insightful and Compassionate.
Format: Hardcover
I really love Nedra Glover Tawwab's work. I started with "Set Boundaries, Find Peace" and that opened the gateway to a broader and more helpful healing journey for me. This book, "Drama Fee" was just an evolutionary step in her series and a more in depth dealing with family relationships. The different perspectives for each chapter on how the concept can be applied was/is helpful as it often feels like books of this nature are only telling the black or white way to focus on a relationship. I felt seen and heard that though my familial relationships are unique there are commonalities and in turn ways to approach healing, reconciliation (with oneself and with family), understanding and compassion, to a achieve drama free relationships. As humans we are bread for connection and I appreciate Nedra Glover Tawwab's help in navigating them.

Read. This. Book.
Format: Kindle
Read this book if you have a dysfunctional family or relationship with family members (including in-laws and extended family). Read this book if you think you don’t. Nedra outlines several different types of familial relationships and how challenging it can be to work through dysfunction or things we have considered normal that are not. Nedra also provides wisdom and tools on how to overcome the many challenges that occur in relationships with family members with gentleness, understanding and realistic observations and advice. Please keep in mind that there will likely be much to unpack from both your childhood and adulthood. It can be an incredibly emotional process in which you might need to take breaks and pauses. However, it is a worthwhile endeavor that will allow you a new, healthier perspective on your relationships with others, and it will cause you to re-evaluate yourself and how you interact with others. This is necessary wisdom for cultivating peace and harmony in your life. I wish fellow readers an eye-opening and heartfelt journey. Be kind and gracious to yourself during this experience and best wishes in creating and living your most authentic life.
