"A devastating read that highlights man's capacity to wreak destruction, but in which one also catches a glimpse of all that is best about people."--San Francisco Chronicle

"A poignant and complex picture of the second atomic bomb's enduring physical and psychological tolls. Eyewitness accounts are visceral and haunting. . . . But the book's biggest achievement is its treatment of the aftershocks in the decades since 1945." --The New Yorker

The enduring impact of a nuclear bomb, told through the stories of those who survived: necessary reading as the threat of nuclear war emerges again.

On August 9, 1945, three days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, a small port city on Japan's southernmost island. An estimated 74,000 people died within the first five months, and another 75,000 were injured.

Nagasaki takes readers from the morning of the bombing to the city today, telling the first-hand experiences of five survivors, all of whom were teenagers at the time of the devastation. Susan Southard has spent years interviewing hibakusha ("bomb-affected people") and researching the physical, emotional, and social challenges of post-atomic life. She weaves together dramatic eyewitness accounts with searing analysis of the policies of censorship and denial that colored much of what was reported about the bombing both in the United States and Japan.

A gripping narrative of human resilience, Nagasaki will help shape public discussion and debate over one of the most controversial wartime acts in history.

Durable and stylish
Color: Black
Bought this for my teenage daughter. The bag is super sturdy and a great deal for the price. All of the pockets help keep her organized and provide plenty of space for all she needs. The canvas is easy to clean and can be wiped with a rag. I plan to buy another in a fun color!

Nice looking medium sized backpack purse
Color: Pink
Although it says nylon in the description, mine is a soft pleather in a soft pink color. Although it has a lot of pockets for storage, it isn't large capacity. It is good for a wallet, phone, water bottle, sandwich, perhaps a cosmetic bag, and that's about it. I do not like pink accessories but this is a creamy light tone of pink and looks nice. The straps are adjustable and very comfortable in the same padded pleather. Lightweight.

Great to take on a trip
Color: Black
We love to cruise and always take an extra backpack with us so we can load up on the travel booty and have a place to put it. Works well as your "one plus" item on the airlines. So the quality on this backpack is just fine. No issues at all. Nothing was falling apart or coming off. Very small when you fold it up which is great for packing in your suitcase. Holds a ton of stuff.... I'd do some shopping to make sure this fits your needs. There are a ton of backpack's in this price range and some appear to have more features.... Also looks... some are cooler looking, but that's just my opinion...even though I'm right... This will do well for you as others will do too... You get a 30 day return policy with this so you could try it out first to see if you like it... if not, return it... nothing to loose...

Decent basic backpack
Color: Green
This is a good, basic backpack. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but it's a solid choice. The sizing is average, it will hold several books and notebooks. The padding felt adequate for most items, but I'm not sure how much I would trust it with an expensive Mac book. The straps were easy to adjust and padded enough. I appreciate that it could be folded up and put into another bag if you needed an extra bag while traveling - it would make a good day pack. Overall a good deal for what it is.
