2018 release. Wide Awake! Is New York's Parquet Courts' fifth record since their forma-tion eight years ago. It's also their most groundbreaking. It's an album about independence and individuality but also about collectivity and communitar-ianism. Love is at it's center. There's also a freshness here, a breaking of new territory that's testament to the group's restless spirit. In part, this may be attributed to the fact that it's produced by Brian Bur-ton, better known as Danger Mouse, but it's also simply a triumph of their songwriter's art. The songs, written by Austin Brown and Andrew Savage, are filled with their traditional punk rock passion, as well as a lyrical ten-derness, but are elevated to even greater heights by the dynamic rhythmic propulsion of Max Savage (drums) and Sean Yeaton (bass). Ultimately then the message contained in Wide Awake! Is complex. "In such a hateful era of culture, we stand in opposition to that - and to the nihilism used to cope with that - with ideas of passion and love," Brown says. For Savage, it comes back to the deceptively complex goal of making people want to dance, powering the body for resistance through a combi-nation of groove, joy, and indignation, "expressing anger constructively but without trying to accommodate anyone."

A Comprehensive Pocket Guide to Christian Living
Format: Paperback
Looking for a book on discipleship? Not sure what discipleship is, or how it relates to Christian living? Want to learn more about how God grows us and wants us to grow?
May I recommend Mapping Discipleship, a 2025 release from Faith Publications by Charlie Carter, co-host of The Thinklings Podcast (my favorite podcast).
I pre-ordered my copy and read it shortly after its (early 👏) arrival. I ended up using it as my devotions, taking extra time to read the suggested passages and think through the reflection questions.
Some pros of this book are
-its small, short size: the chapters themselves are short, making the book more of a "pocket guide" than an intimidating, extensive treatise.
-its catechism style: each chapter's title is a question that the chapter itself answers with Scripture, personal examples, illustrations and analogies, and practical application. Each chapter builds on the next, so start at the beginning.
-its organization: the division of chapters into 3 parts (recognition, renewal, and results -- not exact) makes for a logical progression easy to follow and to implement.
-its depth: though small, Mapping Discipleship packs a big punch in the way it lays out and digs into foundational truths of Christian living and how we grow. Deep thoughts and rich language. Chew slowly.
Mapping Discipleship's only con (for me) is also its pro: its length. A few places I would have loved more fleshed-out discussion and maybe some additional resources.
I'd love to share some of the quotes that impacted me, but I already lent my copy out to a friend. 😅 Just get your own copy -- you will be challenged and blessed!

A Genuinely Good Guy & A Genuinely Fun Read
Format: Hardcover
A prison diary with optimism, realism and humor. You can read this book in its daily snippets, but you won't want to put it down as the daily drama unfolds. Each story leads up to the next in a riveting account of gritty survival.
Peter is a man I genuinely would like to meet some day. Every once in awhile we get blessed with a public servant who has a heart of gold. Someone who doesn't just look after their own selfish interests, but cares about the affairs of others. Peter proves to be that man.
Injected into a jail system with malice as a political prisoner, we find Peter busy helping others. When life gave him lemons, Peter chose to make lemonade for others. He discovered everything that seemed hopelessly mucked up in the prison system. So Peter, the ever-observant statistician, dug deep into the root causes of the massive dysfunction. He then began detangling each individual man's predicament with precision. And love. He genuinely cared about the prisoners and their families, their lives and their future. And when he left, he continued to work to change things for the better. That is honorable and commendable.
