Artemis is a 20x36 inch original acrylic painting on canvas by Krissy Whiski.
A larger, UV-reactive reinterpretation of my 2021 painting Selene, this piece began with the same spark: the Grateful Dead song “Standing on the Moon.” But this version became something bigger.
This original goddess painting honors Artemis, the ancient Greek goddess of the moon, the hunt, the wilderness, and the fierce protection of young women and wild animals. Painted with luminous color and a mystical UV-reactive glow, Artemis blends Greek mythology, moon symbolism, and visionary feminine energy into a powerful image of watchfulness, wilderness, and sacred protection.
I began this second interation of the concept and this particular painting in December 2025, but watching the Artemis II mission coverage reignited something in me. Seeing NASA’s livestream, the joy, the awe, and the emotional weight of humans returning their gaze to the Moon pushed me to finish her. I completed Artemis on April 10, 2026.
During the mission, astronaut Christina Koch said: “To Asia, Africa and Oceania, we are looking back at you. We hear you can look up and see the moon right now. We see you too.” Upon hearing that I cried.
Then then she said
“Human eyes are one of the best scientific instruments that we have.” “Depending on the time that we launch, depending on the illumination of the far side of the Moon… we could see parts of the Moon that never have had human eyes laid upon them before. And believe it or not, human eyes are one of the best scientific instruments that we have."
n this painting, Artemis stands on the Moon and looks back at Earth. She brings together ancient mythology and the modern Artemis mission: goddess, protector, observer, and a reminder of the power of human sight and attention.
Watermarks will not appear on the original artwork.
