Discover the charm of this framed original vintage print, an exhibition poster showcasing the graphic artistry of Edgard Tytgat (1879-1957). Designed and printed in 1969, this first edition is a testament to Tytgat's creative prowess during his time at the Rijksacademie. Immaculately preserved, it originates from a distinguished Amsterdam collection housed in the Rijksmuseum of Fine Arts.
Edgard Tytgat, a Belgian painter, watercolorist, draftsman, and woodcutter, spent his formative years in Bruges. Commencing his artistic journey in 1895 as an apprentice in lithography at his father's studio, Tytgat further honed his skills at the Academy in Brussels under the guidance of C. Montald (1896-1905). Influenced initially by impressionism and his close collaboration with R. Wouters, Tytgat transitioned into a prolific printmaker and narrative painter from 1920 onwards.
His works, steeped in the ambiance of Brussels, draw inspiration from everyday life, circus and fair scenes, folklore, folk tales, and fantasy. Evoking a sense of narrative and populism, Tytgat's pieces radiate mischief, gentle irony, playful eroticism, youthful audacity, wisdom, poetry, and dreams.
Between 1940 and 1950, Tytgat's palette underwent a transformation, adopting a brighter color scheme, and his painting technique became more relaxed. During this period, he also explored religious themes, heroic tragedies, and anecdotal stories, broadening the thematic scope of his artistic expression.
Own a piece of artistic history with this remarkable vintage print, a visual narrative that captures the essence of Edgard Tytgat's diverse and evolving creative journey.
