What it's used for

  • Replacing a damaged or rotten bottom rail on an existing lower sash frame
  • Restoration of period and listed building timber sash windows to maintain original profiles
  • New sash window construction where a traditionally machined bottom rail is required
  • Heritage joinery repairs where matching existing moulding details is essential

Fitting and handling

Before fitting, allow the rail to acclimatise indoors for at least 48 hours to reduce movement once installed. The bottom rail must be scribed and cut by the installer to match the angle of the existing window cill, and we recommend cutting a drip edge along the underside to reduce water ingress at the base of the lower sash. Prime all faces, including any cut ends, before painting to protect against moisture penetration.

FAQ

What is the difference between a sash window bottom rail and a meeting rail?

The bottom rail sits at the very base of the lower sash and meets the window cill when the sash is closed. The meeting rail sits at the top of the lower sash and meets the equivalent rail on the upper sash in the middle of the frame, forming the draught seal between the two sashes.

Do I need to cut the bottom rail to size before fitting?

Yes. The 1.2m length is supplied as a blank for you to cut to your required width. You will also need to cut the underside to match the angle of your existing cill and, if required, to add a drip edge to help shed water away from the base of the frame.

Can I order a sash window bottom rail in a specific timber species or length?

Nottage Timber Merchants can often supply sash window components in alternative timber species or cut-to-size lengths. Contact us directly with your requirements and we will advise on availability and lead times.

For related mouldings and joinery sections, browse the pine mouldings collection at Nottage Timber Merchants. We supply trade and retail customers throughout Bridgend and South Wales, with local collection available from our yard.

Great toy!
Color: Grass Green, Size: Medium
We have a boxer and pit mix and he destroys everything. This toy however lasted the longest. He played with this every day and he plays very rough. But after 3 months I finally threw it out. It was still in tact but it was about to start falling apart. I will definitely buy another one.

Great for aggressive chewers
Color: Mixed, Size: Medium
This toy held up well. My dog is a very aggressive chewer and will shred apart any toy she can. She was not able to tear up this one. I have not found many toys that she doesn't destroy

Smaller than pictured
Color: Mixed, Size: Medium, Color: Mixed, Size: Medium
It’s a lot smaller than pictured and I have the same dog type as was depicted in the one of the pictures. The dog like it so I guess that’s good. I will not be playing tug of war with him using this. I like my fingers thank you very much. I would say it durable. He destroys most toys in minutes. He did destroy the squeaky part in about 10 minutes so bonus points for that.

Not for aggressive chewers. But still a good product.
Color: Mixed, Size: Medium
Cute toy, my dog was obsessed with it, but within like 1-3 days I couldn’t put any treats in the places for it as my aggressive chewer dog destroyed it within a day or so haha. But she still loves it and just chews on it for fun. Doesn’t last long with aggressive chewers if you’re looking to put treats and such in it like I did. But again that part may be broken and she still chews on it so not too bad!
