You always wanted to do something to help, but weren’t sure where to begin….
When you see needs of the poor in Africa on TV or on the web, you say to yourself, “Yeah, I wish I could do something, but I’m only one person, and I’ve got my life here … What can I do?” So, welcome to the fellowship of a bunch of other ‘only one persons’!
Asante Ministries Canada is a family of individuals and organizations caring for orphans, widows, and the needy in Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi. Our dream is to see a new generation of Africans become agents of change by overcoming life’s challenges of poverty, illiteracy and disease.
About Asante Video
Child sponsorship enables individuals to personally invest in the life of an orphaned or needy child in Africa by making a long-term financial commitment of $41 per month or $492 per year.
In some of the communities that we serve, only one out of every two children can afford to go to school. Our goal is to ensure that every child has access to quality education. Children have the right to access an education that provides them with the tools they need to grow up into self-sustaining adults. The best way to ensure change in any community is to educate its children in a way that releases them to become responsible and able citizens.
Asante supports two primary schools in Rwanda and two transitional schools in Burundi and Uganda with a combined student population of 3,000 children. Asante hires and supports top qualified teachers with a smaller teacher to student ratio, offers after school tutoring, and provides free uniforms, shoes and supplies to the children as well as one meal a day in a Christian environment. The schools also run extra-curricular activities such as music, art and craft.
The schools are funded through our child sponsorship program, which makes it possible for the children to receive all their school supplies, school uniforms and a hot meal at school.
In some of the communities that we serve, more than 150 children out of every 1,000 under age 5 will die from preventable or treatable causes this year. There may be cures for their conditions, but they don’t have access to the necessary medication, treatment, or immunizations. Some of them die because their parents lack basic knowledge of nutrition, hygiene, and health care.
Asante works with families and communities to ensure that they have access to the resources and knowledge they need to stay healthy. One of the ways we do this is through our child sponsorship program, which provides health care for the child. Because children die of simple diseases such as malaria every day, this basic health care can save lives at a very small cost. Asante also provides education to the families about hygiene and basic health practices.
Asante Ministries was originally started in Rwanda by a couple of ‘one persons’ – students who wanted to do something to help the orphans in their area. From that humble start in 2001 it spread to helping widows; then to building schools; then to vocational training programs, then to a touring children’s choir. Along the way, many other ‘one persons’ linked up with them in the US, Canada, the UK, and elsewhere who decided that they could accomplish great things together.
Today, Asante Ministries has over 3,000 sponsored children, vocational training programs for widows, three schools attended by over 700 students, and the Asante Children’s Choir. Not bad for something that started with just a couple of ‘one persons’ who in 2001 just had dreams and ideas…
